Start with a free INHSA family account: it gives your family our spelling app, the INHSA Spelling Trainer. Registering a speller for the 2027 Homeschool Spelling Bee is a separate step you take inside your account.

How to register

Three steps to Bee day

  1. Step 1: Create your free family account

    A parent or guardian signs up for the family. Your account comes with the INHSA Spelling Trainer, our spelling app.

    INHSA reviews each new family. Once we approve yours, your spellers can log in to the spelling app and practice the official word lists, and you can download this season's study materials:

  2. Step 2: Add your speller(s)

    In your account, add each child who will practice or compete. Each speller gets their own login for the spelling app; it works once INHSA approves your family.

  3. Step 3: Register for the 2027 Homeschool Spelling Bee

    Registration dates will be posted here.

    In your account, choose Register for the Bee and pick your speller(s). You'll confirm each speller's county and grade, read the 2027 Suggested Rules for Spelling Bees – Quick Start Guide, and affirm that your speller qualifies.

Can my speller compete?

These rules are for entering the Bee. You don't need to meet them to create an account or use the spelling app. When you register a speller for the Bee, you read the 2027 Quick Start Guide and affirm that your speller qualifies under its rules and the INHSA rules below.

  • Lives in one of these 10 counties
    Idaho
    • Benewah
    • Bonner
    • Boundary
    • Kootenai
    • Shoshone
    Washington
    • Ferry
    • Lincoln
    • Pend Oreille
    • Spokane
    • Stevens
  • Homeschooled, grades 4–8 Not enrolled in a public, charter, or private (non-homeschool) school. Attends a school? School spellers enter through their school; see inwspellingbee.com (opens in a new tab).
  • Age and grade limit Has not completed 8th grade, and had not turned 15 by August 31, 2026 (the cutoff for the 2027 National Bee).
  • No repeated grades Has not repeated a grade to extend eligibility.
  • Normal school activity Takes at least four courses other than language arts, spelling, Latin, Greek, vocabulary, and etymology, for at least four hours each weekday, for 34 weeks between August 17, 2026, and May 28, 2027.
  • One Bee path per season Hasn't already competed in and been eliminated from another Scripps-affiliated Bee (school, homeschool or another region's) in the 2026–27 season.

When you register for the Bee

  • Log in, choose Register for the Bee, and pick your speller(s).
  • Confirm each speller's county of residence and grade.
  • The 2027 Quick Start Guide opens on screen. Read it to the end (you can also open the PDF in a new tab).
  • Check “I affirm that my speller qualifies according to these rules,” then press Register.

After you join

What happens next

  1. Get approved, then study

    INHSA approves new family accounts. Then your spellers can practice the official words in the app, and you can download the 2027 Words of the Champions and rules from your account.
